Latest Brand Developments in the Pouches Market from Summer 2024

High Key Wine was founded with a rich heritage in the world of wine. There are four tight knit families who make up the High Key Family and have deep roots with either enology or viticultural backgrounds. The Rahal family has been growing grapes for generations on the fertile soil found along the shores of Lake Erie in Pennsylvania. In fact some of the wine found within their pouches is produced from vines that were planted during the time that Mr. Rahal’s father and great uncle ran the farm, over 70 years ago.

Good wine starts in the wine cellar but exceptionally great wine starts first in the vineyard. In their vineyards the grapes are hand trimmed each year. During the growing season, meticulous attention to detail keeps the young grapes free of mold and other defects.

Excellent communication between both the vineyard and the wine making crew helps to isolate the ideal time for harvest. A harvest that is too early will result in acidic or “green” flavours that are undesirable, while waiting too long raises the risk for weather related damage to threaten the crop. A perfect balance needs to be found. Once harvest time hits, there is a thinning process which ensures that only the ripest grapes make its way to their wine presses.

Capri Suns for Adults

Whether you’re headed to the beach, a concert, or just sitting in your backyard, it’s never a bad idea to have some wine nearby. These pouches from High Key Wine Co. make it easy to have a boozy sip with you at all times. There’s no need for a corkscrew here! These single-serving wine pouches have a twist-top that reveals a built-in straw. I know, could it get any easier? It’s also resealable, so you can put it down in between sips. The pouches come in three flavours: Sweet White, Semi-Sweet Rosé, and Dry Rosé. Each pouch is 187 millilitres, which is the standard glass of wine, and contains 12% ABV.

“We all remember the good things we’ve enjoyed out of a pouch, like juice and applesauce. Why not wine?” High Key Wine’s website says. The best part is that these wine pouches can be delivered straight to your door (with some state restrictions). You can order a six-pouch variety pack, so you get two of each variety, or a six-pack of one type. So now there’s never an excuse to not have wine on hand.

Capri Sun Group Mono-material

The Capri Sun Group wants to replace multi-layer films for the flexible beverage packaging of its Capri-Sun products with a mono-material. The new drinking pouch will initially be introduced in the UK and then gradually rolled out across Europe, the company said. According to the Swiss group, a total of more than 2 bn 200 ml and 330 ml pouches were recently sold in Europe and the UK.

According to the holding company, the new polypropylene packaging is gradually replacing the reportedly non-recyclable pouches made of laminated layers of aluminium, polyethylene, and PET that were previously used. The change in material would have no effect on the shelf life of the fruit juice drinks, Capri Sun said in response to a Plasteurope.com enquiry.

The new pouches consist of 85% PP, in addition to the paper straw, adhesives, and printing inks. The pouch has been individually certified by the institute for recyclability and product responsibility, Cyclos-HTP (Aachen, Germany; www.cyclos-htp.de), which confirms a recyclability of 95%, excluding the drinking straw. Capri Sun recommends disposing of the straw in the paper waste stream and the pouch via the yellow bins or yellow bags of Germany’s so-called dual system for recycling waste. Nevertheless, when the popular drink pouches are consumed on the go, this separation is likely to be difficult.

In the UK, the new 200 ml pouches still have to be recycled via special collection points in shops due to a lack of recycling infrastructure. The 330 ml packaging with the screw cap can, however, be disposed of through the UK’s regular recycling stream for plastics, as the cap allows the pouch to be recognised by sorting plants, according to a statement from Switzerland. Corresponding disposal instructions can be found on the back of the packaging.

Last year, Capri Sun divested its own film and bag manufacturing operations by selling subsidiary Pouch Partners (Baar, Switzerland) to Canadian label manufacturer CCL Industries.

Larger Serving Sizes

For years, Capri Sun fans have called for a larger serving size to enjoy even more of their childhood favourite drink. In fact, between 2020 and 2023, a staggering 76 percent of suggestions received by the Capri Sun call centre were about fans wanting a bigger product size.1 Just in time for summer, the brand is answering this call with the launch of Capri Sun Multi-Serve, a 96 oz. bottle of Capri Sun’s top-selling Fruit Punch flavour, and the brand’s first innovation in nearly a decade.

As the brand behind the number one kids’ drink, Capri Sun pouches have largely been for on-the-go occasions. Now, Capri Sun Multi-Serve is bringing this fan-favourite taste to everyone, particularly to the kitchen table in an additional convenient format to enjoy with families and bigger groups.

“With this larger format, everyone, including kids at heart, can bring a piece of their epic childhood to parties, summer gatherings and even dinnertime at home,” said Jordan Mann, Senior Brand Manager, Capri Sun. “We’re now able to delight those fans that grew up on Capri Sun with an offering that suits their needs. They’ve outgrown the serving size of the pouch, but not their love for Capri Sun.”

The launch of Capri Sun Multi-Serve marks the brand’s expansion in the $38 billion Ready to Drink category. The latest innovation is set to drive growth for the brand, especially at a time when consumers are looking to club retailers for value by buying in bulk to accommodate many in the household.

Fruitella Pouches

Drinks supplier Manchester Drinks Co is to launch a five-strong range of Fruitella branded drinks. Pouches in Orange, Strawberry, Blackcurrant & Apple, Summer Fruits and Cherry are to roll into 670 B&M stores. The HFSS compliant ready-to-drink pouches contain less than 17 kcals per serving.

Manchester Drinks Co was “thrilled to be working with such an iconic sweet brand as Fruittella”, said co-founder Richard Benjamin. “We believe the brand lends itself perfectly to a fruit juice drink,” he said. “All the lovers of the sweets can now refresh themselves with our range of RTD juice drinks.”

The fruit juice pouches would “provide consumers with a convenient, delicious, and affordable way to enjoy their favourite fruit flavours”, according to Carla Fernández-Moreno, F&B manager at Fruitella brand owner Perfetti Van Melle. “The fat cap design not only adds convenience but also sets us apart in terms of innovation and their on-brand colourful design will ensure they stand out at retail,” Fernández-Moreno added.

Manchester Drinks Co has previously worked with Perfetti Van Melle, having teamed up with the Italian-Dutch multinational to launch a range of Fruitella branded squash last summer. It also makes Toxic Waste and Slush Puppie branded pouches (which – unlike the Fruitella pouches – are designed to be frozen and consumed like a slushy), and a host of alcoholic drinks including gins, liqueurs, seltzers and RTD cocktails.

MYOM Oat Milk Paste

MYOM oat milk paste has been developed by the UK-based brand as an ultra-sustainable alternative to conventional oat milks on the market that allows consumers to create their own on demand. The product comes packaged in pouches with a 65-gram serving size that’s rated to create 500ml of oat milk when mixed with water and only needs to be refrigerated once the milk has been mixed up. The pouch packaging is recyclable and is easy for consumers to dole out into a vessel of their choosing.

The company commented on the MYOM oat milk paste saying, “MYOM eliminates waste, excess packaging, and the need to keep things cold as it’s shipped from here to there. In fact, our pouches are post-able so we can deliver your milk straight to your door. MYOM is the best-in-glass, no-compromise oat milk.”
